Phantom film props up for auction

Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum starred in the film version Props and costumes from the film of the musical Phantom of the Opera are to be put up for sale in an internet auction. Around 250 items from the movie, which was released last year, will be placed on auction site eBay by Really Useful Films on 26 November. The costumes include a crystal gown worn by Minnie Driver, along with more unusual props like a severed head. Organisers say "all remaining props and costumes" from the 2004 movie will be sold in the auction. An earlier sale in May saw the Phantom's distinctive white leather half-mask - worn by Gerard Butler in the film - sold for £6,350. Based on a novel by Gaston Leroux, the film tells the story of a masked figure who haunts a Paris opera house and falls in love with a young soprano. Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage version, which was adapted for the film, has been performed in London's West End for the last 19 years.   'Rent' fails to pony up By Mike Clark, USA TODAY Wed Nov 23, 6:45 AM ET The movie Rent brings to mind The Phantom of the Opera from last December and A Chorus Line from almost exactly 20 years ago. The New York stage smashes became more like Yucca Flats dinner theater on the big screen. So it is with the movie of Jonathan Larson's Rent (* *), in which stage-like characterizations clash against realistic East Village settings and homogenized production numbers. With heavy HIV subtext and a couple of actors who have scored in other films, this La Bohème spinoff about fatal illness, drug addiction and eviction ought to be less of a slog than it is. Stage original Taye Diggs, playing an erstwhile friend turned evictor, actually made a stronger screen impression in Malibu's Most Wanted. And won't most viewers say, "Diggs controls the building; why should he put up with deadbeats, however likable they are?" Of course, it's the job of stage artifice to paper over such rude real-life questions. This is why New York-driven movie musicals can be hard to finesse. West Side Story did it (though some didn't think so at the time), thanks to its visuals, choreography, editing, Natalie Wood's aura and two Oscar-winning performances. The great Milos Forman's Hair, the movie Rent most recalls, didn't - though Forman got the kind of stylish honorable failure out of it that Chris Columbus (Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter films) can't claim here. As on-screen apartment-squatters go, there was more musical magic when Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman danced delightedly to the "Orange Juice on Ice" radio jingle in Midnight Cowboy. (Opens Wednesday nationwide. PG-13 for mature thematic material involving drugs/sexuality; strong language. Running time: 2 hours, 15 minutes.)
